Who Is An Event Professional?

Last week Mark and I attended the inaugural meeting of the Event Industry Association of Ireland. We had some really good discussions there and there was one question I really think we, as an industry, need to be able to answer - who is an event professional?

Congratulations

Firstly, I would like to congratulate and thank Elaine O’Connor and Mary Weir for the hard work they have put in to get this idea off the ground. Given the fact that anyone working in events has a lot on their plate most of the time, for them to take this on as well is some undertaking in itself.

In my own opinion the event industry in Ireland needs this association to give it a voice and to promote itself as an industry which has a positive impact on the Irish economy every year. Hopefully it also will be able to help set a standard that Event Managers and Producers must meet and therefore improve the standards of events in general.

At the start of the meeting we were asked the question “What are the challenges facing the industry?” and discussions were had on the topic.

The big question

The first thing that came into my head was a question which has been bugging me for a long time...who is an event professional?

Is a person who gets paid for organising an event a professional?

Or is a person who has an event related qualification a professional?

Or is someone who has years of experience running an event a professional?

Or is it a mix of all three?

My thoughts

A few years ago I was a person that had organised some events but had never been paid for it. I wanted to forge a career in events so I thought the best route was to go a do a degree in the area, but the more I have learned and worked the more I have realised that experience is what makes the professional.

The longer you work the more professional you become.

The event industry in Ireland is still very new and many of its pioneers (or old timers like Mark & Martin) didn't have the opportunity to study event management as the courses didn’t exist but through experience they have developed the skills to be able to produce high quality, safe and enjoyable events effectively.

But they are also aware that there are courses that can make them better at what they do. They're always on bloody courses!

The bottom line

So, my conclusion on this is that is that event professional must be both experienced and qualified with some standard of certification.

There needs to be a minimum standard that people calling themselves Event Professionals should have to meet.
